The Walker Wellness Eating Disorder Groups are designed for adolescents or young adults who are seeking more knowledge and understanding of the underlying reasons as to why they developed a formal eating disorder, or other comorbidity diagnoses such as depression, anxiety disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Patients will learn how to overcome these symptoms and will receive a psycho-educational perspective on the symptoms related to an eating disorder such as personality traits and characteristics, distorted body image, perfectionism, fear of intimacy, emotional maturity.
Moreover, the meal therapy and nutrition education will serve as an education on balanced and healthy nutrition. The adjunct therapy such as music therapy, art therapy, equine therapy, and cooking classes are considered to be useful in identifying underlying causes of the eating disorder by using expressive therapy. In essence, group therapy is recommended for individuals who would like the benefits and support of meeting with people with similar issues. Through psycho-education and group processing, participants develop coping mechanisms, strengthen prevention and wellness techniques, and build self-esteem and a positive body image.
